David Morton

David Morton will be in his fourth year as the Kentucky State University head softball coach in the 2020-21 season.. Morton has been a part of the Kentucky State University athletics family since 2009 in a variety of roles.


As the interim head coach, the Thorobreds advanced to the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship game in 2018. Under his tutelage, Jittaun Thompson earned first team all-SIAC. During his time with Kentucky State, the softball program has advanced to the championship game four times. He served as the assistant softball coach from 2009 until 2017.


Five Kentucky State University student-athletes, including three on the first team, earned all-SIAC honors in the 2019 season. Freshman Katelyn Hurley, in addition to her first-team award, was named 2019 SIAC Relief Pitcher of the Year. Pitcher Paola Flores, a second-team honoree, became the first Kentucky State University student-athlete to earn Academic All-American honors.


The 2020 season was suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic.


Morton has been the school’s assistant equipment manager from 2009 to 2016 before moving to the compliance office as the athletics compliance coordinator from 2016 to 2018.


A graduate of Kentucky State University, the Cincinnati native lettered in baseball before moving briefly to the Atlanta Braves organization.

Alysha Sakamura

Fresh off a stellar playing career, Alysha Sakamura is in her second year on the Kentucky State University softball coaching staff as an assistant coach.


A four-year starter for the Thorobreds, she finished her career with a .310 batting average and led the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in walks as a senior. Her keen batting eye allowed her to be ranked nationally in bases on balls in three of her four years, including being second as a junior.


She was a two-time All-SIAC preseason season and earned honorable mention All-HBCU following her senior season. Following her final year, Sakamura was named Kentucky State University’s Female Athlete of the Year.


Sakamura earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Physical Education, graduating with departmental honors and cum laude.
