A native of San Antonio, Archer had served as a volunteer coach from 2015-19, working under the past three Comet head coaches. During that stretch, he served as the Comets' first base coach in 2017 when the program claimed its only ASC champion. Additionally, Archer has been associated with the program for more than a decade as the owner and general manager of Extra Innings in Plano, the Comets indoor training facility. Since 2006 opening his Extra Innings facility in 2006, he has worked alongside five of the last six Comet head coaches.

Making his first stop as a collegiate head coach at UTD, Archer has served in that capacity at the high school level over the past decade-plus. He comes to UTD directly from Prince of Peace Christian School, where he was the head coach from 2019-21. He also served as the head coach at Canyon Creek Christian Academy (2012-15) and Ursuline Academy of Dallas (2009-12).

Coaching softball is a second career for Archer as he spent 1993-2006 as Group Manager/Senior Manger at Fidelity Investments in Westlake.

Archer earned his bachelor's degree in business management from ASC foe LeTourneau in 1998.

Kelly and his wife, Leisha, reside in Plano and have two sons, one daughter and two granddaughters.
