Bill Vasko

Bill Vasko is entering his sixth year as the Frostburg State head softball coach after being hired in September of 2018.


2023 saw continued success for the program, with new program records set for hits (458) and doubles (80) while recording the second-most wins (31), runs (310), and stolen bases (109). The 31-22 record marked the most wins since 2013, as the team reached yet another MEC Tournament as the North's #3 seed. Vasko also secured his 100th career Frostburg win during the year.


Four players earned All-MEC honors, with Jamie Roberts earning First Team and three players named to the Second Team. Roberts became the team's first NFCA All-Region player since 2017 and was the second-ever player named a College Sport Communicators Academic All-American.


In 2022, Vasko led the team to a 29-18 record in the Mountain East Conference, reaching the most wins in program history since 2016. The Bobcats advanced to day two of the Mountain East Conference Championships, ultimately falling to #1 West Liberty on day two. Vasko coached the MEC Freshman of the Year, along with four All-MEC Second Team selections. He also coached two players to earn MEC Softball All-Tournament Team honors.


In 2021, Vasko led the softball team to a 25-17 record and fell just short of the MEC championship game. The Bobcats went into the the tournament as the 2 seed in the North Division and went 3-2 over the 2 day tournament. Vasko coached a pair of All-MEC 2nd team selections (Kat Treff, Shawna Leonard), 14 NFCA Scholar athletes, 13 All-MEC academic selections, and Taylor McCarty who was nominated as NCAA Woman of the Year.


The Bobcats finished 4th in the MEC in both team batting average (.298) and earned run average (2.54), while tying for 1st in triples (15). Early on in the season the Bobcats went on an 8 game win streak with doubleheader sweeps against Salem University, Davis & Elkins, Wheeling, and Alderson Broaddus.


Vasko’s second season at the helm in 2020 was cut short, but the Bobcats quickly captured five wins in their first season at NCAA Division II. FSU won it’s first DII contest with a 5-3 win over Emmanuel in the season opener. Frostburg also captured three wins in four games at the Chowan Tournament, while scoring 24 runs in the three victories.


In his first year, he led the Bobcats to 17 wins, including a win against in-state rival Salisbury in Frostburg’s ninth consecutive trip to the CAC tournament. The Bobcats advanced to elimination Sunday of the pod final. As a team, the 2019 Bobcats set program records for triples (16) and stolen bases (69).


Vasko led the senior and first-year duo of Olivia Ford and Amber Keene to All-CAC honors. Ford set Frostburg’s single season and tied the CAC’s season mark with 31 stolen bases on the season. Keene paced the team in batting average (.433), walks (17), hits (52), RBI (33), doubles (16), triples (3), home runs (6), and total bases (92). Keene’s doubles also led the CAC.


He arrived at FSU after serving as an assistant softball coach at NCAA Division I UMass Lowell for four seasons, helping the team to 70 victories during his tenure. In 2018, Lowell finished second in the America East Conference regular season and runner-up in the league tournament.


Prior to UMass Lowell, Vasko coached at Division I Quinnipiac during the 2014 season and was the head coach at Division II Wheeling Jesuit from 2008-2011.


Prior to his time at Wheeling Jesuit, Vasko was the Athletic Director and Co-Head Softball Coach at Buckeye Trail High School in Lore City, Ohio from 2002-2008. Vasko's other coaching experience includes stints at Muskingum University in New Concord, Ohio (1999-2002) where he served as the assistant baseball coach and strength & conditioning coordinator.


Vasko held the same position at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio (1995-98) where he was also an assistant football coach. He also served as an assistant football coach at Denison University (1999), Otterbein College (1998), Ohio Wesleyan University (1994), and an undergraduate assistant football coach at The Ohio State University (1992-93).


Vasko is a native of Cambridge, Ohio and a 1994 graduate of The Ohio State University.
