What does it cost?
You are already paying for the tournament, the flights
and the hotel. Here is exactly where a membership sits in that budget.
Youth sport is expensive and we are not going to pretend otherwise. Club
fees, kit, boots, tournament entry, travel. Before we ask a family for
anything, it is fair to show what it adds to a bill you are already
paying, and what it changes.

The membership adds about six and a half percent to a trip you had
already decided to take. It is the smallest line on the list, and it is
the only one that changes whether anybody is looking for you when you
get there.
Set against what college actually costs
The average college in our directory reports a net price of
$19,337 a year once grants and scholarships are taken
off the sticker. Over four years that is roughly
$77,000.
A year of membership is about one eighth of one percent
of that four-year figure. It is the cheapest decision in the entire
process, and it is the one that happens early enough to matter.

We cannot promise a scholarship, and anybody who does is
selling you something. What we can tell you is that a coach who has never
heard your name, does not know your position and does not know which game
you are playing is not going to find you on a field with three hundred
other athletes on it.
