Scot Hemmings

Scot Hemmings will be in his eighth season as Albany State University’s head baseball coach. He guided the Golden Rams to a historic season during 2023 with a school record 38 wins and only 11 losses along with an impressive 30-2 SIAC conference record and won another regular season SIAC title. The Golden Rams saw nine players receive all conference honors with Jeremiah Reddell finishing with an impressive 12-0 record a 1st team all-conference selection, ABCA Rawlings All South Region second team selection and second team all-south region selection. Freshman Luke Addison was selected Utility Player of the Year. The 2024 Rams return their entire staff minus one arm and have several talented newcomers to boost an already talented team.


Before he took over the helm of the ASU baseball program, Hemmings was the head coach at Darton State college where he won 212 games over a five year span.


In his final season as the coach at Darton (2016) the team finished 43-21, won their second consecutive regular season and GCAA conference tournament title, their first ever East Central District title, and made their first ever appearance in the NJCAA World Series in Grand Junction, CO. The Cavaliers saw several individual highlights during the 2016 season; starting catcher John Cable was named both Player and Defensive player of the year and was also chosen as a NJCAA All-American. Darton had a total of 13 different players receive post-season honors and Coach Hemmings was named GCAA Region 17 and East Central District Coach of the Year.


Denzell Gowdy was drafted and signed by the San Diego Padres and is currently playing Rookie Ball in Arizona. Coach Hemmings and his staff saw their sophomores sign scholarships to four year institutions: John Cable (University of New Orleans), Jeremy Beasley (Clemson/Anaheim Angels), Rabon Martin (Louisville), Sam Goberdhan (Armstrong Atlantic), Tyler Morris and Kendall Herron (Valdosta State), Mike Huggins (GA State), Colten Thomas (South AL), and Taylor Ferringer (walk-on tryout at UGA). The Cavaliers played in the conference championship game in 2013, 2014,2015, and 2016 with winning both the first ever regular season title and conference tournament title in school history during the 2015 and 2016 season. Coach Hemmings teams have won three consecutive regular season titles (two at Darton and one at ASU). The Darton State program finished its existence with only two coaches heading the program with Glenn Eames and Hemmings.


In Hemmings' first season, the Cavaliers set a new school record in wins with an overall record of 38-20 and then set another school record for wins with a 47-9 mark in 2013. A total of eleven team and individual records were broken in 2012 and then 10 records were broken in 2013. Five Cavaliers earned all conference selections, 2 earned academic All-American honors, 3 conference tournament all-tournament team selections, 2 Rawlings Gold Glove selections, and a NJCAA All-American in Cody Wofford for the 2013 season. The Cavaliers had 5 Division I signees, 4 Division II signees, an NAIA signee and 1 player drafted in the 23rd round by the San Diego Padres. The Cavaliers finished the season as runner-up in the conference tournament to end the season with a record of 47-9. The Cavaliers achieved another program "first" in 2014 with their first ever District appearance losing to Columbia Sate in the championship game. The baseball team finished 44-20 in 2014 overall and saw several records broken again. In 2015 and with over 20 freshman on the roster, the Cavaliers went 40-19 23-9 in conference play and won the regular season and conference tournament title.


Hemmings is a graduate of Columbus High School, where he played for three Georgia State High School Championship baseball teams under legendary coach Bobby Howard. Hemmings enjoyed a fruitful athletic career at Columbus High, where he was named to the First Team All Bi-City Team in both football and baseball and First Team All-State during his senior campaign. Upon his graduation in 1995, Hemmings was drafted by the New York Yankees in the 61st round, but chose to attend college instead, and played 2 years at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College for Coach Craig Young. While at ABAC, Hemmings broke the school record for stolen bases as a freshman, and as a sophomore earned First Team All-Conference honors, while leading his team to a third place finish in the GJCAA in 1997.


Upon completion of a stellar career at ABAC, Coach Hemmings earned a baseball scholarship to Columbus State University. The San Diego Padres drafted Hemmings in the 18th round of the 1997 Major League Baseball June draft, and he elected to sign with the Padres. He played three seasons in the Padres organization, making it as high as AAA – Las Vegas and became highly regarded in the front office for speed, power, and a strong arm to the table, and was on a focused track to the big leagues. Unfortunately, his career became injury riddled and he was forced retire after a short spring training stint with the Detroit Tigers in 2000.


After finishing his playing days, Hemmings joined the staff at Alabama junior college powerhouse, Chattahoochee Valley Community College. In 2003 he helped guide the Pirate program to a school record 41 wins and a 2nd place finish in the AJCAA conference tournament. Hemmings spent two seasons under Coach Adam Thomas before he moved his career to Andrew College in Cuthbert, GA. Hemmings’ team set a school record for wins in 2006 (34) and was named Georgia Dugout Club Coach of the Year. After a 3rd place finish in 2006 and 2007, Hemmings was again named Diamond Sports Regional Coach of the Year. Coach Hemmings decided after the 2008 season to move back to Columbus area as he accepted the head coaching position at Central High School on May 30, 2008. After rebuilding Central High School's baseball program and leading them back to the state play-offs for the first time in 6 years, Coach Hemmings accepted the Head Coaching job at Darton State College. He became only the 2nd Coach in Darton State's history replacing legendary Coach Glenn Eames and has now been in Albany for 13 years.


Hemmings is a 2002 graduate of Troy State University with a degree in business administration and a 2005 graduate of Troy State University with a master’s in business administration degree. Born May 6, 1977, the Columbus-native was married to the former Amy Thomas on January 3, 2004 and they have two daughters Addie Loette and Allison Caroline and a son Brandon Scot Jr.
