Justin Walker

Justin Walker was named head coach of the George Mason softball program in July 2021 after having served in an interim role during the 2020 campaign. He will be coaching his fourth season with the Patriots in the 2024 season. Walker joined the softball coaching staff as an assistant in 2018.

Walker was named interim head coach of the Patriot softball program on April 15, 2020, where he later led the Green & Gold to an 8-0 record to start the 2021 season, the program's best start since 1983. Walker capped off his first season at the helm with the program's first winning season (18-17 overall record) since 2014.

In the classroom under Walker, 26 softball student-athletes were named to the 2020-21 Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll, 96 percent of the team's roster

Walker's second year as head coach saw more improvement on the field. In 2022, the team won 24 games, the most since 2004. Four patriots earned postseason conference accolades that year as well. Haley Taormina, Taylor Dadig and Marlaina Bozek were named All-Conference Second Team, while freshman Jordan Anderson was named to the All-Rookie team. In that same season, Bozek was named to the NFCA Mid-Atlantic All-Region Second Team. Bozek, along with Dadig, were also named to the Virginia Sports Information Director (VaSID) All-State's Second Team.

In the classroom, 12 Patriots were recognized as Easton/NFCA All-America Scholar-Athletes. This award is given to student-athletes who carry a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher.

In his third year, Walker led the 2023 Mason Softball team to its best season in softball history, winning the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament and earning a bid to the NCAA College Softball Tournament. He and his coaching staff were also honored with the ATEC/NFCA Division I Regional Coaching Staff of the Year award, Mason's first ever such award.

The softball team broke numerous Patriot records, such as home runs (27), doubles (90), slugging percentage (.408), RBI (226), stolen bases (135), walks (191), fielding percentage (.977) and strikeouts pitched (360). Their 35-win season is also tied for the fourth-most wins in a single season in program history and the most since 2002.

Over the course of the 2023 season, the Atlantic 10 recognized George Mason 10 times in their weekly Pitcher/Player/Rookie of the Week awards, the most of any school in the conference that season.

Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Year and First-Team All A-10 Team member Aly Rayle and First Team All A-10 member Nicole Bechtel were also nationally recognized as NFCA Pitcher (March 28) and Player of the Week (April 25), respectively. Being given national awards was also a first for Mason Softball.

Two other Patriots were awarded end of the season conference awards in the 2023 season. Second baseman Marlaina Bozek was named First Team All A-10, while third baseman Haley Taormina earned Second Team All A-10. Taormina, Rayle and Bechtel were also named to the NFCA's Mid-Atlantic All-Region Second team.

In the 2023 Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament, Walker and the fourth-seeded Patriots created even more history. Not only did they become the lowest seed to be crowned conference champion since 1990, but they were lowest-ever sole owner of the championship, as the 1990 tournament had co-champions.

The road to the A-10 trophy for the #4 Patriots meant beating #5 Fordham (the previous champions), #1 Saint Louis and #2 Loyola Chicago. Four Patriots were named to the All-Championship team for their exceptional play that week. The players named were Carly Cooper, Maddy Myers, Haley Taormina and Aly Rayle.

Rayle was also named Most Outstanding Player of the Tournament. She went 4-1 with a 1.06 ERA, striking out 39 batters in her 33 innings and allowed only two walks. Rayle pitched a gem of a first game against Fordham, striking out a record 18 batters en route to her complete game shutout victory.

Justin Walker's team also excelled in the classroom at George Mason. During the Green and Gold Awards, the softball team was awarded the President's Cup, an award given to a Mason team with the highest cumulative team GPA in the fall semester of 2022. The team was again recognized in the spring semester of 2023 for having the highest GPA in Mason athletics, achieving a team cumulative GPA of 3.59. In that same Green and Gold Awards, Nicole Bechtel was awarded Women's Most Improved Player, while freshman Elyssa DeRosa was awarded Women's Rookie of the Year. At the end of the 2023 season, 10 Patriots were recognized as Easton/NFCA All-America Scholar-Athletes and the team as a whole was nationally ranked 38th out of 172 eligible Division I schools in team GPA.

"[W]hen I was presented the opportunity to become the interim head coach, my staff and I did everything in our power to help create a positive and constant place for our team to grow on and off the field while having success in the classroom," said Walker. "I look forward to seeing that growth continue and develop throughout my years at George Mason."

Under the direction of Walker in 2021, the Patriots' pitching staff finished with the fewest hits surrendered in the Atlantic 10, second-fewest earned runs, third in team ERA (2.68) and opponent batting average (.254) and fourth in total shutouts (6). The Green & Gold also finished second in the conference in stolen bases (62) and fourth in fielding percentage (.964) last season.

During his first season as interim head coach, sophomore Rachel Warrens was named to the A-10 All-Conference Second Team and A-10 All-Rookie Team while junior EJ Bankson earned VaSID All-State honors. Senior pitcher Haellie Gordon was also named A-10 Pitcher of the Week (March 16) under Walker.

In the fall of 2023, George Mason and Coach Walker agreed to a contract extension that would last through the 2027-28 season.

Prior to his time with Mason softball, Walker spent four seasons with the baseball program.

As a member of Mason baseball, Walker was part of a coaching staff that brought an A-10 Championship to Fairfax in their inaugural season (2014) as members of the conference and the program's first conference title since 1992.

A native of Marengo, Ohio, Walker is a graduate of Rio Grande University in Ohio, where he earned his degree in sports and exercise studies with a minor in coach leadership.

Campbell Hutcherson

Campbell Hutcherson was named as an assistant coach for the George Mason softball program in June 2022. Hutcherson will be entering her second season with the Patriots in the 2024 season.

On July 27, 2023, Campbell Hutcherson was promoted to associate head coach. She will enter her first season as associate head coach in the 2024 season as well.

Prior to her move to Fairfax, Va., Campbell spent this past year at the University of Virginia as a volunteer assistant coach. Hutcherson helped the Cavaliers finish with an overall record of 28-26, 13-11 in conference play. Virginia made a post season appearance in the National Invitational Softball Championship tournament in Fort Collins, Colorado.

A North Carolina native, Hutcherson spent the past five years (2017-21) playing first base at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

As a freshman (2017), Hutcherson was ranked seventh in the Atlantic Coast Conference in chances and putouts (297), ranking fifth in both categories during conference play. In addition, she helped UNC tie the single season record for double plays, turning 10, the third most by a freshman in school history.

In Hutcherson's junior campaign (2019), she contributed to 14 double plays, which ranked fifth in the UNC single season record book. Campbell helped the Tar Heels advance to the NCAA Regional Final against Ohio State with her single and RBI.

In 2020, Campbell led the Tar Heels in walks (11) for a team best on-base percentage (0.473). The senior turned six double plays in her 23 appearances before the season was cut short due to COVID-19.

During her five years in Chapel Hill, Campbell started in 172 of her 200 games played. Windy Thees

Windy Thees was named the assistant coach for the George Mason softball program on August 9, 2023. Thees will be entering her first season with the Patriots in the 2024 season.

Windy Thees is coming to Fairfax with over 20 years of coaching experience, which included head coaching positions at Georgia College & State (1999-2005), University of Memphis (2005-11), University of Mississippi (2011-14), Utah State University (Associate Head Softball Coach, 2015-18) and Winthrop University (2018-23).

Thees has spent the past five seasons as the head softball coach at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, S.C. In her first season as head coach in 2019, Thees' squad finished as the Big South Conference Tournament runner-up and posted 30 victories on the season for the first time since the 2008 season. The 2023 Eagles finished with a 26-24 record, which was the fourth winning season in the past five years and a feat that had not been accomplished in the 2000s. She also coached Winthrop pitcher Reese Basinger, who posted a 2.01 ERA and pitched a 13-strikeout perfect game. Bassinger was later named as a member of the 2023 All-Big South Conference First Team.

During her time at Utah State, Thees specialized in working with pitchers & catchers and served as an assistant coach with the Aggies. After her first year in Logan, Utah, she would be promoted to associate head coach prior to the start of the 2016 season. In her first year as associate head coach, Utah State posted a 26-25 overall record, their best record since 1996. Thees and her Aggie squad would build on their success the following season, putting up a program-best 33-18 overall record and a 14-9 Mountain West league record in 2017. In the same season, Coach Thees produced a pitching staff that posted a 3.09 ERA, which was the lowest by Utah State pitchers since 1998. She also produced an all-Mountain West First Team pitcher in Kellie White, who led the position with a 2.51 ERA in 2017. In 2018, senior catcher Brina Buttracavoli was named to the All-Mountain West Second Team.

At Ole Miss, Thees was the head coach for the Rebels for three seasons. In each of those three seasons in Oxford, Miss., her squad won at least 22 games and garnered multiple all-conference awards. Under her leadership, the Rebels increased their hits total every year, including a then-program record of 396 hits in 2014. She also set program records in 2014 in other statistical categories, such as runs batted in, walks and single-season saves. Her 2012 record of runners picked off (19) still stands today.

Windy Thees created the Memphis Softball program and was named the program's first head softball coach in 2005. Her best season at Memphis was in 2011, when the Tigers earned their first NCAA Tournament berth and went 36-14 with a .720 winning percentage, which is still the best winning percentage in its program's history. The 2011 season also saw them beat softball powerhouses Kentucky and Stanford in the regular season, post a 15-7 winning record in Conference USA play, receive national poll votes for the first time in program history and set a school-record of winning 10 games in a row. In her six years as head coach, Windy Thees produced nine all-conference awards, eight all-conference freshman team awards and three NFCA All-South Region selections.

Thees' first coaching opportunity was at Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville, Ga., where she was named head coach at the age of 24. In 2003, Thees led the Bobcats to the Division II National Championship, where they would eventually finish as the national runner up. In her five seasons as head coach, Thees set numerous statistical records and helped her players garner all-conference, all-regional, weekly, and all-American awards. Her .639 winning percentage (163-92) is still the best head coach winning percentage in its program's history.

She is currently the battery coach for Great Britain's U22 softball team. She has been with the Great Britain coaching staff since 2018 and has been helping to develop softball players to compete in numerous tournaments such as the European Championships and World Championship Softball events.

A native of Mesa, Ariz., Thees was a four-year starter at both catcher and second base at Florida State from 1993-97, leading the Seminoles to three ACC Championships. She earned her bachelor's degree in marketing and multinational business from Florida State in 1997 and a master's degree in business administration from Georgia College & State University in 2002.

Soccer in College gave me a good point of reference for perspective coaches, somewhere I could direct them to see all of my data, in a well-organized, efficient manner. It was a good tool for my recruiting efforts.
