Joe Guthrie

Joe Guthrie enters his second season at the helm of the Blazers for the 2021-22 season. Guthrie was named the fourth head coach in program history on July 9, 2020. In his first season, Guthrie propelled UAB to its first C-USA Championship appearance since 2016.


2021 Highlights:

Guided the Blazers to the highest program winning percentage (.620) since 2015

Coached the Blazers to the second-best conference winning percentage in program history (.750) and highest since 2006

Tied program record of five All-Conference Team selections, including a program-first four first-team selections (Sierra Frazier, JoJo Readeaux, Jenna Olszewski and Amy Woodham)

Set the record for most home game victories in a season at Mary Bowers Field (20)

Led UAB to its third-ever C-USA Championship title game appearance

Conference USA regular season runner-up

Run-ruled Ole Miss in five innings 13-5, UAB's first win over an SEC team since 2016

As an Assistant/Associate Head Coach (2018-2020)

Guthrie was originally hired as an assistant for the Blazers in July of 2018 and promoted to Associate Head Coach in January of 2020.


In his first two seasons with the Blazers he worked heavily with the defense which ranked third in Conference USA in 2020 before the season was cut short due to COVID-19. The Blazers led C-USA in chances and putouts and finished second in assists. In 2019 the Blazers defense tied for second in C-USA in double plays with 26, ranking 11th in the nation in double plays per game (0.52). Guthrie also contributed to base running, hitting and recruiting for the UAB program.


He previously served as an assistant coach at Louisiana, spending the 2018 season with the Ragin' Cajuns. While there, Louisiana went 41-16, finishing second in the Sun Belt during the regular season and were runners-up in conference championship. Guthrie helped guide Louisiana to its 19th straight NCAA Tournament appearance.


Prior to Louisiana, Guthrie spent time in the National Pro Fastpitch League with the Scrapyard Dogs in 2017. Guthrie served as a volunteer assistant at Bucknell during the 2017 season after two years as an assistant coach at Penn State (2014-16). At Penn State, the Nittany Lions broke over 30 records as he coached six All-Big Ten selections, three All-Region selections and two players who earned All-Big Ten Tournament selections.


Guthrie spent six seasons as the head softball coach and assistant athletics director at Marion Military Institute in Marion, Ala. and also served as a scout in the Miami Marlins organization from 2006-07.

Courtnay Foster

Foster was named Associate Head Coach on September 24, 2020. She begins her fourth season working with the UAB pitchers and first season as Associate Head Coach.


She previously spent one season at Louisiana as a volunteer assistant coach and working with the Ragin' Cajuns pitchers. Before making the move to Louisiana, Foster was the head coach at Bucknell (2016-17) where she guided the Bison to a 50-43 record and saw four of her players earn five All-Patriot League awards.


She also had a five-year stint (2011-15) as an assistant coach at her alma mater, Northwestern. With the Wildcats, she coached Kristen Wood and Amy Letourneau as they both led the Big Ten in strikeouts and ranked in the top 20 nationally in strikeouts in 2013 and 2014, respectively.


As a student-athlete for Northwestern, Foster was a three-time All-Big Ten and Academic All-Big Ten selection, a two-time NFCA All-Mideast Region award winner and a 2005 NFCA All-American. She racked up 80 wins, 1,014 career strikeouts and led Northwestern to a WCWS victory over Alabama in 2006.

Scott Woodard

UAB softball head coach Joe Guthrie announced the addition of Scott Woodard to his staff on July 20, 2020. Woodard will serve as an assistant coach for the Blazers working primarily with hitting and recruiting duties.


“I am absolutely thrilled to announce Scott Woodard as our next assistant softball coach at UAB,” said Guthrie. “He was at the top of the list of who we wanted to hire and will compliment Courtnay and I very well on our staff. Scott is known as one of the best recruiters and teachers in softball. His accomplishments at both Auburn and Arizona State speak for themselves. He will be assisting our program in all aspects of the game and we are very excited to work with him and welcome him to Birmingham.”


Woodard brings with him over 30 years of coaching experience with stints at Auburn, Arizona State and DII Western New Mexico.


As an assistant coach at Auburn from 2013-17, Woodard helped accumulate four 40-plus win seasons and back-to-back Women’s College World Series appearances in 2015 and 2016 including the 2016 WCWS final. Woodard helped the Tigers break 23 records, 17 on offense. He also helped develop 13 All-SEC performers including 2016 SEC Player of the Year and two-time First Team All-American Kasey Cooper.


Prior to his time at Auburn, Woodard served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Arizona State from 2011-13. While at ASU, Woodard helped the Sun Devils to a pair of WCWS appearances in 2012 and 2013 accumulating over 50 wins in each season.


Before moving to Tempe, Woodard spent 15 years as director of athletics and head softball coach at his alma mater Western New Mexico University. He helped the Mustangs restart their softball program in 1998 and held his position as head coach until 2001, returning again in 2008.


Woodard also served as WNM head baseball coach until the program was cut in 1993 and assistant football coach from 1992-96.


The Carlsbad, N.M. native played short stop for the Mustangs where he was named to the Rocky Mountain Athletic All-Conference Team twice in his career. He graduated from WNM in 1985 with a Bachelor of Science in biology and a Master of Arts in administration in 1986. He was inducted into the Western New Mexico Athletic Hall of Fame in September of 2017.
