College showcases 101
A showcase is the most efficient thing a college coach
does all year. Understanding why tells you how to be useful to them.
A college coach cannot travel to a thousand club games. The budget does
not allow it and neither does the calendar. So the sport built an event
that solves their problem: put hundreds of recruiting-age athletes on
adjacent fields over one weekend, and invite the coaches to come and
watch as many as they can.
What the weekend looks like from their side
A coach arrives with a list. It is not a list of every athlete at the
event, it is a shortlist of players who wrote to them, whose profile
they read, and whose position they need for a specific graduating class.
They plan their two days around that list.
Games run in parallel across multiple fields and sometimes multiple
venues. A coach physically cannot see them all. Every athlete they do
watch is an athlete they chose in advance.
Registering and showing up is not a recruiting strategy.
It puts you on the field. It does not put you on anybody's list. The
contacting is what does that, and it happens weeks before you travel.
What that means for you
- Find out which colleges are attending, well before the event.
- Write to the ones you would genuinely consider.
- Tell them where and when to find you once the schedule is posted.
- Follow up afterwards, whether or not they made it to your game.
None of that requires you to be a better player than you are today. It
requires you to be easier to find than the athlete on the next field.
